The year was 1969, and stop if you’ve heard this one before: a growing suburban part of Metro Vancouver was getting an exciting new mall.

“It is the largest shopping mall under one roof west of Winnipeg” said one of the developers.

It’s a somewhat generic beginning, and for a while, this mall seemed set for a fairly generic redevelopment into condos and mixed-use retail. 

But what happens to a mall when that redevelopment takes forever to take place? And what happens when a mall stops trying to be exciting, and in the process becomes a whole lot more interesting?
