Mall Podcast #8: City Square Shopping Centre
For a mall next to City Hall, City Square may fly under the radar — but it’s a fascinating mix of neighbourhood necessities and Vancouver history.
The year was 1989, and Vancouver City Hall was about to solve a big problem across the street from City Hall.
For decades a couple of famous heritage buildings had languished and fallen into disrepair. Now, they were being reborn, renovated – and converted into part of a brand new mall.
With such a unique design and such a prime location, would it become one of this city’s best loved malls?
Or would it turn into something different – but no less curious?
Episode Guests: Vancouver journalists Jen St. Denis and Dan Fumano.
